Vablatsky, Cassandra (1894-1997) – a celebrated seer and the author of Unfogging the Future, a textbook in Harry's Divination class [POA4, Famous Witches and Wizards cards]

Vaisey, – a Slytherin student and Chaser on the Quidditch team [HBP14]

Valentine's Day – Professor Lockhart decorated the walls in pink flowers, arranged for heart-shaped confetti to fall from the ceiling, and had dwarves in cupid costumes deliver cards and singing valentines [COS13]; several years later Harry had his first real date with Cho Chang on Valentine's Day; they had coffee in Madame Puddifoot's tea shop, where golden cherubs hovered over the tables and occasionally threw pink confetti [OOTP25]

valerian roots – a potion ingredient in the Draught of Living Death, which was a very powerful sleeping potion [HBP9]

Vance, Emmeline – a stately looking witch and a member of the Order of the Phoenix ; she was one of Harry's Advance Guard; she was murdered on Voldemort's orders [OOTP3, HPB1, 4]

Vane, Romilda – a Hogwarts student two years below Harry; she had large dark eyes, a prominent chin, and long black hair; she tried to give chocolates laced with a love potion to Harry, but unfortunately Ron ate them [HBP7, 11, 14, 18, 24, 25]

Vanishing Cabinets – a pair of very large, very valuable, black-and-gold magical cabinets that transported people to unknown places; one cabinet was at Hogwarts; Nearly Headless Nick persuaded Peeves to drop this cabinet right over Filch’s office to divert the caretaker’s attention so Harry wouldn’t get in trouble; Fred and George stuffed Montague into the cabinet when he tried to dock points from Gryffindor; the other cabinet was in Borgin and Burkes in Knockturn Alley; Malfoy fixed this cabinet in the Room of Requirement, and the Death Eaters entered Hogwarts through it [COS4, OP28, HBP24, 27, 29]

vanishing sickness – a contagious magical disease that was treated on the Second Floor, “Magical Bugs,” at St. Mungo's Hospital [OOTP22]

Vanishing Spell – a spell that made something disappear; fifth-year students learned this spell in Transfiguration class; the incantation was Evanesco ; Snape could do it with a wave of his wand [COS6; OP5, 12, 13, 17, HBP18, 26]

Varney, Sir Herbert (1858-1889) – a Victorian vampire who preyed upon women in London during the 1880s; he was captured and killed by a special squad from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures [Famous Witches and Wizards cards]

vault seven hundred and thirteen –this vault in Gringotts Bank held the Sorcerer's Stone; Dumbledore asked Hagrid to take the stone to Hogwarts for safekeeping [PS/SS5]

Vauxhall Road – a major thoroughfare in London ; Tom Riddle bought a diary in a Muggle shop in Vauxhall Road [COS13]

Vector, Septima – the Arithmancy professor at Hogwarts [POA12, GF13]

veela – a magical creature; veelas were the mascots of the Bulgarian National Team and danced before and during the Quidditch World Cup; veelas were shapeshifters – when happy they were beautiful and particularly attractive to the male sex, but when angry their faces turned into bird heads with sharp, cruel-looking beaks and long, scaly wings burst from their shoulders; Fleur Delacour’s grandmother was a veela [GOF8, 9, 18, 22]

Venemous Tentacula (COS), Venomous Tentacula (OOTP, HBP) – a spiky, dark red plant with long feelers and teeth; the seeds looked like “shriveled black pods” and were a Class C Non-Tradeable Substance; Fred and George Weasley needed them for their Skiving Snackboxes [COS6, OP9, HBP11]

Veritaserum – a powerful truth potion used to make someone truthfully answer any question; it was colorless and odorless; the use of Veritaserum was strictly controlled by the Ministry of Magic; there was an antidote for Veritaserum [GOF27, 35; OP32; HBP9, 17, 21]

Verity – the name of Fred and George Weasley's assistant; she worked in Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley [HBP6]

vine wood – Hermione's wand was made of vine wood and dragon heartstring (JKR website]

Violet or “Vi” – the Fat Lady's best friend, she was a wizened, pale old witch; her painting was in the small room off the Great Hall [GOF17; HBP17]

Vipertooth – Peru 's native dragon [QA]

Viridian, Vindictus – the author of the book Curses and Countercurses [PS/SS5]

Vlad the Impaler – a famous vampire who was the son of Count Vlad II Drakul (Vlad the Dragon) of Wallachia; he was also known by his nickname of Dracula, meaning “son of the dragon” [Famous Witches and Wizards cards]

Voldemort, Lord – formerly Tom Marvolo Riddle; he was the heir of Slytherin; his ruthless rise to power was cut short when his Killing Curse rebounded on him when he tried to murder Harry Potter; he gained a new body, gathered together his Death Eaters, and started another war to gain control over the Wizarding world; he was also called the Dark Lord, You-Know-Who, and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named; most witches and wizards were too afraid to say his name

Volkov – a Beater on the Bulgarian National Quidditch Team [GOF8]

Voyages with Vampires – a book written by Gilderoy Lockhart [COS4, 6]

Vratsa Vultures – a Bulgarian Quidditch team, one of the greatest of all the European teams [QA]

Vulchanov – a Beater on the Bulgarian National Quidditch Team [GOF8]
