House Cup
The importance of the house cup was emphasized in McGonagall's first speech to the first-year students: "Your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor" [PS/SS7]. Thus, the actions of each student were important for the entire house. However, in the quest for the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry wisely recognized that the honor that came from being crowned house champion was less important than the battle between good and evil.
The house cup was won by the following houses:
First year - Gryffindor [PS/SS17].
Second year - Gryffindor [COS18].
Third year - Gryffindor [POA22].
Fourth year - Unknown; the Great Hall was draped in black to honor Cedric Diggory [GOF37].
Fifth year - Unknown, though the contest was rendered unfair by Dolores Umbridge.
Sixth year - Unknown; there was no end-of-year feast due to the death of Professor Dumbledore [HBP30].
Seventh year - n/a.
