Hogwarts Clubs & Societies
A variety of organizations exist in the Wizarding world. Some of them are official and others were formed by various witches and wizards to promote a particular cause or to have fun. Not all of the societies listed here have Hogwarts connections, but they are included here for completeness.
Brotherhood of Goblins [B.O.G.] - This group works for goblin rights, including the right to carry and use wands. Members of the B.O.G. were meeting with Ministry representatives in Chipping Sodbury when a small riot broke out. Some goblins apparently got hold of real wands and transfigured postboxes and litter bins into wildebeest and marched through the streets chanting B.O.G. slogans. The leader of the organization is Brodrig the Boss-Eyed [[DP]].
Campaign for Greater Freedom for Wizards - Glinda Crook spoke for this group in the Daily Prophet, decrying the actions of the Ministry of Magic designed to reign in the actions of wizard-kind on Halloween [[DP]].
Charms club - A club at Hogwarts; Vicky Frobisher, a Gryffindor student, said that Charms Club would be more important then Quidditch in the event of a conflict [OOTP13].
Death Eaters - A group of witches and wizards who followed Lord Voldemort. All the Death Eaters were marked with a Dark Mark on their forearm. Death Eaters wore a black cape with a mask. After Voldemort's sudden disappearance, the Death Eaters lost their ability to function effectively [GOF9]. After Voldemort's return, the Death Eaters started another war to serve Voldemort [GOF33], and after his second defeat, most were captured [GOF36].
Duelling Club - Dumbledore allowed Lockhart to start a Dueling Club at Hogwarts [COS11]. Two years later Harry found himself facing Voldemort in a duel [GOF33, 34]. The following year, Harry taught the DA dueling techniques; some of the students fought well against the Death Eaters in the Battle at the Ministry of Magic and later in the Battle at Hogwarts. Some of them used those same dueling skills against Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle on the Hogwarts Express. In 1430 there was an All-England Dueling Competition. Back then, the contest was won by Alberta Toothill who upset the favored Samson Wiblin with a Blasting Charm [Famous Witches and Wizards cards]. Dueling still exists as a sport in the Wizarding world in the same way that fencing is a sport in the Muggle world. While a friendly sporting competition, it is essentially a form of combat. Professor Flitwick was rumored to be a champion duelist [COS11].
Dumbledore's Army [DA] - Twenty-nine students met with Harry as their teacher to practice Defense Against the Dark Arts skills, so they could protect themselves and others against Voldemort and his followers - and also so the fifth-year students could pass their Defense Against the Dark Arts OWL [OOTP16, 18]. During the 1997-1998 school year, Dumbledore's Army reconvened to fight against the Death Eaters' regime at Hogwarts [DH29].
Goblin Rights groups - Over the past centuries, various groups have advocated goblin rights, sometimes with violence. In the 1990s, some goblin groups met with representatives of the Ministry of Magic, hoping to create a Bill of Goblin Rights [DP]. Oswald Beamish was a pioneer of goblin rights [Famous Witches and Wizards cards].
Gobstones - A game involving stones played something like marbles, in which the stones spit disgusting liquid at the opposing player when they lose a point. There are Gobstone clubs at Hogwarts [OOTP17] and an International Gobstones League [DP] Many of the kids at Hogwarts have a set of Gobstones, and it's played fairly regularly [COS10, POA16, GOF20]. Harry was tempted to buy a solid gold set in Diagon Alley [POA4]. The offices of the Official Gobstones Club are in the Department of Games and Sports on level seven of the Ministry of Magic [OOTP7].
HeadlePS/SS Hunt - A social club of ghosts who have been beheaded and play headless sport games. Nearly Headless Nick had been rejected for membership in the Hunt by its leader, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore [COS8].
Inquisitorial Squad - Professor Dolores Umbridge established this squad after she replaced Albus Dumbledore. This squad was a select group of students who were supportive of the Ministry of Magic - and Umbridge [OOTP28]. Members of the Inquisitorial Squad were Draco Malfoy, Millicent Bullstrode, Montague, Pansy Parkinson, and Warrington [all Slytherin students]. The squad could punish any student by taking away house points.
Order of Merlin - Although the Order of Merlin is now an award, the famous wizard Merlin originally conceived this organization, which made rules against using magic on Muggles [FWW].
Order of the Phoenix - Albus Dumbledore formed this group formed during the first war to fight against Voldemort; he reestablished this group after Voldemort returned to power.
Quidditch teams and clubs - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin all have Quidditch teams. There are also professional Quidditch clubs [QA]
Quidditch Union for the Administration and Betterment of the British League and its Endeavors [Q.U.A.B.B.L.E.] - Dunbar Oglethorpe is the head of this organization [FWW].
Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare [SPEW] - Hermione Granger founded in response to what she saw as the gross injustice in the treatment of house-elves. The group was not popular with any of the other Hogwarts students. During Harry's sixth year, this group wasn't mentioned.
Society for Distressed Witches - Dorcas Wellbeloved founded this society the 1800s [FWW].
Society for the Reformation of Hags - Honoria Nutcombe founded this society about 1700 [FWW].
Society for the Tolerance of Vampires [STV] - This society, which has a candlelit office in London, advertised for someone to run the office, with preference to be given to applicants with a garlic allergy [DP].
Troll Rights Movement - Miss Heliotrope Willis is the spokesperson for this movement. She spoke optimistically about trolls' essentially peace-loving nature [she sounded a lot like Hagrid and Barnabas the Barmy] and of the valuable protection services that trolls provided [DP].
