Remembrall
Appearance: A glass ball the size of a large marble, normally looks
white and smoky, glows red if the holder has forgotten something.
Function: The magical equivalent of typing a string around
your finger. A Remembrall's function is to let the owner know when he or she
has forgotten something.
How to Use: Hold it tight in your hand and observe any
changing of color.
Notes: The only Remembrall we've seen is Neville's, which
was sent to him by his Gran early in his first year. Draco Malfoy found it
on the ground after Neville fell off of his broomstick and refused to give
it to Harry. This started a broomstick chase, ending with Neville's poor Remembrall
being dropped from midair, barely caught in time by Harry. This incident was
Harry's first major rule-breaking incident, and also led to his first major
success at Hogwarts; being named Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team
and the youngest House player in a century.
It has been stated that Remembralls are not allowed in examination
rooms at Hogwarts.
The major drawback of a Remembrall is that it can only tell
you if you are forgetting something, not what you are forgetting, so it has
proven itself to be of little practical use to Neville.
It has been suggested that either Neville's poor memory was
caused by a Memory modification or that he suffered a mild form of brain damage
at the time his parents were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange.
Both his memory and magical skills have improved significantly since his first
year. As Neville will likely continue his way to the forefront of the stories,
we may learn more back story on Neville and his need for a Remembrall.
