Players

There are four types of player in a game of Quidditch: Keepers, Chasers, Beaters and Seekers. Each is described in turn here.

The Keeper

It is the responsibility of the Keeper to guard his team's goal hoops and prevent the opposition from scoring. Although scoring areas are marked at each end of the pitch in the vicinity of the hoops, the Keeper does not have to stay within these areas and can go anywhere on the pitch if he or she wants to do so. In the old days, Keepers were even allowed to take the Quaffle and score at the other end. There have, however, since been a number of rule changes, and Keepers no longer allowed to do so.

The Keeper can prevent the Quaffle passing through the hoops in any way he sees fit, as long as he is not breaking any rules.

Known Keepers include:

Miles Bletchley (Slytherin House Team)
Meaghan McCormack (Pride of Portree)
Cormac McLaggen (Gryffindor House Team)
Darren O'Hare (Kenmare Kestrels)
Barry Ryan (Ireland National Team)
Ron Weasley (Gryffindor House Team)
Oliver Wood (Gryffindor House Team, Puddlemere United Reserves)
Zograf (Bulgaria National Team)

The Chaser

Chasers have existed since the very beginnings of Quidditch and are responsible for the majority of point-scoring play. When in possession of the Quaffle, it is the job of the Chasers to score goals by throwing it through one of the opposing team's hoops. When the opposition has the Quaffle, it is their job (along with the Beaters) to stop them.

Chasers can do what they wish with the Quaffle and carry and/or propel it with any part of the body as long as they are not breaking any rules. Traditional Chaser play involves carrying the Quaffle in one hand and passing it to team-mates by throwing, however.

The scoring areas marked on the field of play are designed specially for Chasers. Only one Chaser is allowed in the scoring area at any one time, and he must be carrying the Quaffle.

Known Chasers include:

Katie Bell (Gryffindor House Team)
Bradley (Ravenclaw House Team)
Cadwallader (Hufflepuff House Team)
Chambers (Ravenclaw House Team)
Roger Davies (Ravenclaw House Team)
Dimitrov (Bulgaria National Team)

Petrova Porskoff (Russia National Team)
James Potter (Gryffindor House Team)
Adrian Pucey (Slytherin House Team)
Demelza Robbins (Gryffindor House Team)
Zacharias Smith (Hufflepuff House Team)
Alicia Spinnet (Gryffindor House Team)

Troy (Ireland National Team)
Urquhart (Slytherin House Team)
Vaisey (Slytherin House Team)
C Warrington (Slytherin House Team)
Fabius Watkins (Montrose Magpies)
Ginny Weasley (Gryffindor House Team, Holyhead Harpies)

The Beater

The job of the Beaters is to keep the Bludgers away from their own team and force them towards the opposing team. They carry bats with which to strike the Bludgers. Beaters are not allowed to handle a Bludger directly (although this would be difficult anyway due to the nature of this type of ball), nor are they allowed to touch the Quaffle. Due to the physical strength required for the job, it is far more common for Beaters to be wizards rather than witches.

Known Beaters include:

Ludo Bagman (Wimbourne Wasps)
Bole (Slytherin House Team)
Karl Broadmoor (Falmouth Falcons)
Kevin Broadmoor (Falmouth Falcons)
Connolly (Ireland National Team)
Ritchie Coote (Gryffindor House Team)
Vincent Crabbe (Slytherin House Team)

Gregory Goyle (Slytherin House Team)
Joey Jenkins (Chudley Cannons)
Gwenog Jones (Holyhead Harpies)
Andrew Kirke (Gryffindor House Team)
Jimmy Peakes (Gryffindor House Team)
Quigley (Ireland National Team)
Jack Sloper (Gryffindor House Team)
Volkov (Bulgaria National Team)
Vulchanov (Bulgaria National Team)
Fred Weasley (Gryffindor House Team)
George Weasley (Gryffindor House Team)
Ladislaw Zamojski (Poland National Team)

The Seeker

Seekers are usually small, light players with the ability to fly fast and accurately. They play no part in the match apart from attempting to catch the Golden Snitch, and hence are not allowed to touch the Quaffle or the Bludgers. They may, of course, have a Bludger hit at them by opposing Beaters, but when this happens the only recourse they have is to avoid it. The Seeker is allowed to go anywhere he likes within the playing area in pursuit of the Snitch, which is worth 150 points and more often than not leads to victory in the game--this makes the Seeker's job extremely important, and also makes the Seeker a target of attack by the other team.

Known Seekers include:

Regulus Black (Slytherin House Team)
Maximus Brankovitch III (Fitchburg Finches)
Cho Chang (Ravenclaw House Team)
Cedric Diggory (Hufflepuff House Team)
Glynnis Griffiths (Holyhead Harpies)
