Circa 1970
The young Severus Snape finally plucked up the courage to approach Lily Evans and talk to her, having worked out from seeing her playing with her sister Petunia that she had magical ability. His first attempt to speak to her went badly, and she stomped off home with her sister.
1970 onwards
Voldemort began using more overt tactics of evil and terror. He amassed more followers who shared his desire to rid the world of anyone other than pure-blood witches and wizards. He branded Death Eaters with his symbol, the Dark Mark, and summoned the group to him by touching a Mark on the arm of any single follower.
Circa 1970-1971
Severus succeeded in becoming close friends with Lily Evans despite the mess he made of their first meeting, and he began to describe Hogwarts and the wider wizarding world to her. Petunia was annoyed by the loss of her sister to Severus, and took to hanging round eavesdropping on the two of them.
September 1971
· Dumbledore had the Shrieking Shack built outside of Hogsmeade, connected
to Hogwarts School by a long underground tunnel. He planted a Whomping Willow at the Hogwarts end, and cultivated rumours that the Shack was badly haunted.
These developments were to shelter a new student, Remus Lupin, when he transformed
to a werewolf each month.
· The Marauders (James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew)
began studying at Hogwarts, along with Lily Evans and Severus Snape. All were
in Gryffindor house except for Snape, who was in Slytherin and took to calling
himself the Half-Blood Prince. The four Gryffindor boys were friends instantly, particularly
Sirius and James. On the other hand, James and Snape hated each other from the
start.
· Lily Evans, though she came from a Muggle family, proved she had exceptional
ability. Professor Slughorn was impressed and allowed her into his Slug Club,
through which he made influential connections for himself and for others' benefit.
Circa Spring 1974
Remus Lupin's three friends realised he was a werewolf and began working to become Animagi so they could join him in the Shrieking Shack each month at the full moon.
Circa Mid-1970s
· The friendship between Lily and Severus endured, despite the pressures of being in different houses, and Snape's dubious choice of friends and acquaintances. Lily repeatedly lectured Severus about his friends' unpleasant natures, but Snape - feeling important within his little gang - ignored her concerns.
· Severus Snape saw Lupin walking to the Whomping Willow to transform one night, and his curiousity was piqued. He pestered Lupin's friends to find out what he was up to. Sirius Black told him how to get into the secret passage to the Shrieking Shack, figuring that meeting a werewolf at the other end would teach Snape a lesson in minding his own business.
· James Potter, recognising the danger to Snape, followed him into the tunnel to bring him back. He saved Snape's life, not to mention his own and Sirius' reputations. But this never stopped the two from hexing each other when teachers weren't around.
Circa 1975-1976
· Remus Lupin became prefect for Gryffindor.
· The Marauders perfected their Animagi abilities. Sirius Black was able
to turn into a large dog, James Potter learned to transform to a stag, and Peter
Pettigrew could transform into a rat. In their animal forms, Lupin's three friends
kept him company and urged him on adventures every month.
Summer 1976
· The Marauders and their classmates took their O.W.L.s.
· James Potter bullied Snape after their DADA O.W.L., dangling him upside-down with the Levicorpus spell and threatening to remove his underpants. Lily came to the rescue, but in his humiliation he insulted her by referring to her as a "filthy little Mudblood". Despite Severus' later contrition, this proved to be the last straw for Lily, who had already been becoming more and more concerned about his choice of friends and Dark Arts leanings. She broke their friendship forever, leaving Severus with a massive, and now unrequited, love for her.
· On the plus side for Severus, during the incident, Lily refused to ever go out with James Potter.
· The four friends made an enchanted map, the Marauder's Map, which depicted
Hogwarts complete with all its secret passages. Not only that, the Map showed
every single person on the grounds of the school, even those covered by Invisibility
Cloaks.
Circa Autumn 1977
James Potter and Lily Evans were Head Boy and Head Girl. Lily changed her mind
about him.
Late 1970s
· James Potter and Lily Evans were married, with Sirius Black the Best Man at their wedding.
· The Order of the Phoenix, headed by Albus Dumbledore, was active in the fight against Voldemort. Lily and James Potter and the other three Marauders joined up.
· Severus Snape joined the Death Eaters with several of his old Slytherin companions, such as Evan Rosier and Bellatrix Black Lestrange. Regulus Black, Sirius' younger brother, joined Voldemort's followers as well, to the pleasure of his pure-blood-obsessed parents.
19 September, 1979
Hermione Granger, destined to become the cleverest witch of her age group, was born to completely unsuspecting Muggle dentists.
1 March, 1980
Ronald Bilius Weasley was born to his already-strapped-for-Galleons-but-always-good-hearted parents Arthur and Molly, and greeted by his mostly boisterous older brothers, Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George.
Spring 1980
· Sybill Trelawney met Albus Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn to interview for the Divination professorship at Hogwarts. Unbeknownst to herself, she convinced him to hire her after giving an actual prophecy providing details on The One with the Power to Defeat the Dark Lord.
· Severus Snape, now a full-fledged Death Eater, immediately provided Lord Voldemort with details on a part of the prophecy which he overheard.
5 June, 1980
Draco Malfoy was born to Narcissa Black Malfoy and her husband, closet Death Eater Lucius.
June 1980
Dudley Dursley born to the worst sort of Muggles-Petunia (formerly Evans; Lily's older sister) and Vernon Dursley.
Summer 1980
· Lord Voldemort informed his followers that he required the use of a House-Elf for an unspecified task. In reality, he wanted one to test the defences he'd set up for his Locket Horcrux, which he had hidden in the cave he'd visited as a boy. Regulus Black, the youngest member of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, offered Kreacher, not knowing what the Dark Lord planned for him. Voldemort made Kreacher drink his revolting invention, the Emerald Potion, and then left him for dead.
· Regulus, upset at the Dark Lord's treatment of Kreacher, and very concerned about the activities of the Death Eaters in general, turned against his former master. He asked Kreacher to take him back to the Cave and stole the Horcrux, drinking the Emerald Potion himself. Kreacher was ordered back to Grimmauld Place to destroy the locket, whilst Regulus was killed by Inferi in the cave.
30 July, 1980
Neville Longbottom was born to Auror parents, Frank and Alice. Born 'as the seventh month die[d],' and to parents who had thrice escaped Voldemort, Neville was seen as the possible subject of Sybill Trelawney's prophecy.
31 July, 1980
It's a boy - Harry James Potter was born to proud parents, James and Lily Potter, and proud godfather Sirius Black. However, the time of his birth and his parents' history also made him a likely subject of the prophecy.
Autumn 1980
Useless little Peter Pettigrew secretly began serving Voldemort, keeping him somewhat informed of Order of the Phoenix members' movements.
